Faux finishes are back in a big way. A faux finish is a decorative paint or finish that replicates the appearance of materials such as natural stone, metals, or specialty textures. They can be used to add warmth, texture and interest to any space. Our interior designer Raquel Bloam shares three reasons why you should consider faux finishes for your home, and how you can get started!
Create Practical Alternatives
Faux finishes can give the appearance of materials where applying the actual material may be impractical. Almost any luxurious finish can be replicated, such as matte leather, rich metallic, marble or luxurious animal print. For example, you can create a gilded ceiling, or acquire the opulence of marble without the worry of it reacting negatively to acidity or heat, or a leather look-a-like that won’t scratch. Faux finishes also allow for customization, so you can create a look that is unique only to your home.

Highlight Architectural Features
If there is an interesting architectural feature in your home, a faux finish can help make it a focal point. If you have a fireplace, replicate real stone or achieve the look of concrete without a renovation to create depth and richness. Build an accent wall with texture by using a specialty plaster or make an art niche pop with color. Allow your ceiling to masquerade as indulgent shagreen with the help of a wallcovering, and now it’s a beautiful and eye-catching fifth wall.
Add Depth and Texture
Faux finishes can be used in a variety of ways throughout the home, whether to make an architectural statement or reinvent a beloved furniture piece that’s out of style. Faux finishes can even be implemented on furniture, cabinets, and other decorative items. You can make furniture look shabby chic, or elegant and luxurious with an exceptional finish. A finish professional can help you achieve your heart’s desire. Whatever finish you’re looking for, it can be created.
